The Obligation of Zakaah on Jewellery that is intended for Personal Use and is not merchandise:

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said:

“For silver the amount of Zakaah due on it is one fortieth.”

Reported by Al-Bukhaaree (1454).

`Abdullaah ibn `Amr (radiyallaahu `anhumaa) narrated that a woman came to the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) with her daughter who wore in her hand two thick bracelets of gold.  He said to her:

“Do you pay the Zakaah of these?” She said:

“No.” He said:

“Does it make you happy that because of these Allaah will make you wear two bracelets of fire on the Day of Judgement?!” So she took them off and gave them to the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) and said:

“They are for Allaah and His Messenger.”
