The Obligation of Zakaah on Cattle, Camels and Sheep that have Pastured by Themselves and are not for Work or Personal Use:
Anas (radiyallaahu `anhu) said: “When Aboo Bakr (radiyallaahu `anhu) sent me to Bahrain, he wrote for me the following:
“In the name of Allaah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is the obligation of Zakaah that the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) obligated upon the Muslims, and which Allah ordered His Messenger to observe. Whoever amongst the Muslims is asked to pay Zakaah accordingly, he should pay it and whoever is asked more than that (what is specified in this letter) he should not pay it.”
And he mentioned in it:
“And the Zakaah due on sheep, those that have pastured by themselves, is one sheep if there are between forty (40) and one hundred and twenty (120) sheep…”
Reported by Al-Bukhaaree (1454).
Bahz ibn Hakeem narrated from his father who narrated from his grandfather (radiyallaahu `anhu) that he heard the Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) say:
“And Zakaah is due on every camel that pastures by itself.”
