Authentic Ahaadeeth > The Book of Zakaah

The Nisaab of Gold:

It is narrated from `Alee (radiyallaahu `anhu) that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said:

“There is nothing upon you in gold, until it reaches twenty deenaars. Thus, if you have twenty deenaars over which one year has passed, then there is half a deenaar due on it (as Zaakah, i.e., 2.5 %). Anything extra is to be calculated similarly.”

Authenticated by Ibn Hazm (Al-Muhallaa, 6/39), An-Nawawee (C.f. Nasb-ur-Raayah, 2/328), Az-Zayla`ee (Ibid), Ibn Hajar (Al-Mawsoo`ah, 2/127; Buloogh-ul-Maraam, 605), Ahmad Shaakir (Musnad Ahmad, 1/148), Al-Albaanee (Saheeh Abee Daawood, 5/291-295; Al-Irwaa’, 787), Az-Zuhairee (Buloogh-ul-Maraam, 605), `Umar As-Sufyaanee (Makhtulifa fee Raf`ihee wa Waqfihee, 9, 33) and Al-Hilaalee (Takhreeej-ul-Muharrar, 573).

However, whether it is a statement of the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) or that of `Alee (radiyallaahu`anhu) is something that is differed upon.

Ibn `Umar and `Aa’ishah (radiyallaahu `anhumaa) narrated that the Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) used to take from every twenty mithqaals (of gold) half a mithqaal (as Zakaah).”

Authenticated by Al-Albaanee (Al-Irwaa’, 813).
