Adherence to the Qur’aan and the Sunnah & Shunning Bid`ah (innovation in religion):

The Messenger of Allaah (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam) said:

“Surely, I have left among you that which if you adhere to, you shall never go astray: the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of his Prophet (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam).”

“Whoever Allaah guides none can misguide, and whoever He misguides none can guide. Verily, the best speech is the Book of Allaah, and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad (sallallaahu `alaihi wa sallam), and the worst of matters are newly invented ones and every bid`ah* is a dalaalah** and every (person of) dalaalah will be in the Hell-fire.”

* Innovation in religion.

** Deviation, misguidance, heresy.

Reported by Muslim in his Saheeh (1885) except for the last clause which is in Saheeh-un-Nasaa’ee (1577), Saheeh Ibn Khuzaimah (1785) and elsewhere.
